My Adventures In Photography

A while back I started a photography column for my hometown's local newspaper — you'll find all of my columns from those pages here as well as new ones that I write.

Beauty in a blizzard

WINTER WONDERLAND: With recent snowfall much of the local region was blanketed with a beautiful layer of white. These conditions, while hazardous, are a photographer’s paradise.

Most Michigan mornings in the winter are spent cleaning off cars and trying to brave the cold before going to work. However, there are some Michigan mornings that will bring a twinkle to your eye while getting ready to face the day.

Those mornings are the ones just like last Sunday, when freezing rain advanced into a full on blizzard that left a wondrous blanket of white across the local landscape.

After quickly cleaning off my car and packing up my camera gear I set out as soon as the sun rose to get photos of the snow.

Shooting photos like these is great practice for learning how to control your camera’s metering modes. Between the dark trees and the bright snow, your photos will have a lot of contrast.

I’ve decided to keep this post short to let the photos speak for themselves. I like to do this every now and then because I believe photos speak louder words.

Please enjoy these images and remember to always be safe out there if you choose to go out and take winter photos.
